Upstream: RESONATE w Alex Zhang Hungtai, Marta Forsberg, Tripolar Ghost
Resonance deepens, clarifies and strengthens sound. Two resonating waves amplify each other’s trajectory, a symbiosis resulting in shared transcendence of form. ‘To resonate’ also means to strike a personal or emotional chord with someone else. The three artists in this program situate themselves within resonant landscapes, sonic and emotional, in order to amplify what might otherwise lie dormant beneath the noise. Tripolar Ghost (Matthias Schubert and Bendrik Grossterlinden) explore the space between electronic sound, field recordings and improvisation. For Upstream, they turn the Stubnitz’s resonant hull and its liquid surroundings into raw material: through site-specific hydrophone and geophone recordings of the ship and the Elbe river on which it floats, these places are relayed as fragments, textures, voices even, folded back into acoustic and electronic structures in real time. Marta Forsberg is a Swedish-Polish sound artist and musician based in Berlin. In recent years, she has released music through labels such as Warm Winters, XKatedral, and Superpang. Her work delves into themes of language and human memory, with a strong focus on archival research. Here, such themes resonate through a blending of human and synthetic voices that create soundscapes both intimate and ethereal. Since retiring his band Dirty Beaches and starring in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return, Alex Zhang Hungtai has been focusing on resonances of improvised music, free jazz, and his role as a composer. His recent albums ‘Dras’ (Shelter Press) and ‘Orion/Mother’ (American Dreams) situate his saxophone within landscapes of electronic tones and various instruments, bridging a vast gap between interior and exterior scales.
