Nihiloxica meets Chouk Bwa & The Ångströmers
traditional | electronic | alternative bass | vodou dub from Kampala and Gonaives NIHILOXICA from Kampala/Uganda are widely regarded as one of the most invigorating, powerful and transcendental live acts of recent times, and their on-stage fusion of raw polyrhythmic drumming and synthetic sub bass and textures has captivated audiences the world over. The Source of Denial tour will be no different; the band’s most cataclysmic effort to date - cranked up to eleven by a production-forward approach in the studio, and more deliberately saturated, compressed and distorted sonics. Haitian traditionnal vodou band CHOUK BWA met the Brussels based duo THE ÅNGSTRÖMERS in 2016. The connection between the two parts, vodou tradition on one hand, analog electronic rays on the other, is even more profound, with also a kind of rage due to the incredible difficulty of the world. The musical result is untamed and heavily electric. In-your-face: Radical Vodou roots for urban audiences. Entry: 19:30 Concerts: 20:30 Vorverkauf: 14€ (+ Gebühren + 1 ClubEuro fair-tix.de Spende) Abendkasse: 17€ Ermäßigter Eintritt an der Abendkasse für Schüler*innen, Student*innen, Sozialhilfeempfänger*innen: 14€ Tickets: https://www.tixforgigs.com/de-DE/Event/50463 ***** ***** CHOUK BWA & THE ÅNGSTRÖMERS experimental dancehall dub | haitian vodou from Gonaives After a first European performance in 2015 at Roskilde Festival leading to many other performances all around Europe, including WOMEX and WOMAD, Haitian traditionnal vodou band Chouk Bwa met the Brussels based duo The Ångströmers in 2016. Their new project combines a renewed dub sensitivity and Haitian rhythm science and spirituality. The ensemble has performed in Haiti and in European festivals including Trans Musicales de Rennes before releasing their first album Vodou Alé via Bongo Joe in 2020. Modular synths and other vintage electronic instruments bring another dimension to Chouk Bwa’s music, although obviously it is always the band’s groove and fluent tempo that leads the energy of the ensemble: no laptops, no drum machines. There are certain freedoms that cannot be coerced. Even more, the electronic instruments are wired directly to the drums that feed them with impacts and caresses. All the Vodou families are there with their many rhythms and songs. Radical Vodou roots for urban audiences. Chouk Bwa & The Ångströmers had their first performances in 2018 and were quickly selected at Trans Musicales de Rennes in 2019. In May 2020 they released their first album Vodou Ale via Bongo Joe, which received much praise in the press. The two EPs of Ayiti Kongo Dub (2022) are more focused on the dance floor. From May to August 2022, the Chouk Bwa & The Ångströmers team went finally back on stage. Playing about thirty concerts in Europe they took the opportunity to record their live set. The connection between the two parts, vodou tradition on one hand, analog electronic rays on the other, is even more profound, with also a kind of rage due to the incredible difficulty of the world. Their first album since the pandemic is called Source of Denial, and they’ve focussed the chaotic energy of this captivating record squarely at the hostile and prohibitive visa systems of the UK and the wider world, and they do so with good reason. These systems directly interfere with Nihiloxica doing what they do best: getting together in a room and exploring the commonalities of the dance music traditions of Europe and Uganda. Since their inception in the Nyege Nyege studios in 2017, Nihiloxica have explored the fertile spaces to be found between the traditional rhythms of Ugandan folk music and club music of Europe. Yet as they progress, ever more influences are bleeding into the mix. Nascent extreme metal tendencies come to full fruition on Source of Denial, and we are treated to the band’s most cataclysmic effort to date - cranked up to eleven by a production-forward approach in the studio, and more deliberately saturated, compressed and distorted sonics. The band’s live reputation needs no introduction. Nihiloxica are widely regarded as one of the most invigorating, powerful and transcendental live acts of recent times, and their on-stage fusion of raw polyrhythmic drumming and synthetic sub bass and textures has captivated audiences the world over.
