Upstream: ECHO w/ Dylan Kerr, ABADIR, Morgan Garrett
In every space, architectural or not, worlds of meaning echo in plain sight. Histories gather like layers of dust, memories are summoned into the present, and vital aspects of life (and death) go unremarked. The three artists in this event play with the tension of bringing such themes to light. Dylan Kerr’s artistic practice often starts with attuning to a site’s histories and unique resonant qualities. For Upstream, they present Substratum, a composition for voice and fixed electronics that draws inspiration from the Hindustani Dhrupad tradition. Playing from his 2022 album Ison, ABADIR—the solo project of Cairo-born music producer and sound designer Rami Abadir—revisits the cultural surroundings of Cairo for potential mutation, drawing on the Coptic, Syriac, Maronite, Greek Orthodox and Catholic choir chants he heard growing up in the city. Diving into the frantic instability of precarious headspace, Morgan Garrett wrestles with the sharp edges of life and death. In his performances, acoustic guitars are less played than daubed, and detuned, spidery electrics sputter and collapse. - Dylan Kerr (b. 1996, Ireland) is an artist and vocalist working across performance, sound, installation, moving image and composition. Their practice is deeply attuned to place, often creating works that engage with the unique resonant qualities and histories of specific environments. In their compositions, they combine process-based methods, microtonality, and extended vocal techniques to explore psychoacoustic phenomena such as interference patterns, combination tones and the interplay between the voice and space. https://dylankerr.net/about ABADIR is a music producer, sound designer, DJ and music critic born in Cairo, Egypt and based in Berlin, Germany. His work varies between a large spectrum of styles, combining cinematic, club and ambient music. His concepts deal with themes inspired by fiction, memory and cultural artefacts. He has participated in various festivals like Roskilde, CTM, Rewire, Primavera Sound, Unsound, Nuits Sonores, Lost Music, Lunchmeat, Linecheck, Insomnia. ABADIR is part of the SVBKVLT roster, and his latest EP ‘The Primitivist’ is released on Planet Mu. His artistic practice extends to academia, music criticism and critical theory. One of those souls reared in the borderlands where rural Appalachia begins to melt into the Midwest, where the long shadows of DuPont Chemical and Perdue Pharma lay over thousands of lives. Reaching for any sonic tools without pretense of recapitulating any musical tradition, his work evades the confines of genre, but has found a home amidst both the more personal and off-kilter visions from American noise and industrial music, and the fringes of electronic music. Morgan's live performances are notoriously potent and surreal, often compared to Butoh. Strobing footlights both obfuscate and illuminate Morgan's extreme gestures and unwavering energy throughout his psychodrama. The 2024 release of his acclaimed debut LP Purity on Orange Milk Records underscores his commitment to his craft and to the wider world of challenging electronic music. "The Mirror” is Morgan’s follow-up to Purity, and his most realized project to date.
