sonopol #19: Jana De Troyer, Chi Him Chik

‚The egg is round, as I‘ Jana De Troyer - live coding Microscopic crevices in my comfort bladder seep through the overgrowth of my habits. Head becomes tail, an endless feedback of events. It mustn’t repeat itself. Whether it’s 21, 28 or 29,3 days, I know it will. The egg is round, as I laid it in my heart. Jana De Troyer positions herself at the dynamic borders between styles and disciplines. Concurrently, she deftly switches between her roles of composer, free improviser, instrumentalist, human, sound artist and programmer. Coming from a background as a contemporary saxophonist, Jana has always been curious about further exploring and fusing various modes of expression. This “Experimentierfreude” has brought about a myriad of creative collaborations with composers, musicians and artists from other disciplines such as visual arts, dance and coding. https://www.janadetroyer.com ‚Where/is/my/mind/(Re)Flection‘ Chi Him Chik - electronics, megaphone/screaming, objects, and visuals Oscillating between various disciplines of performance, free improvisation and composition, Chi Him Chik (b. 1994) expands the spectrum of performance practices from the acoustic instrument of saxophone to megaphone, screaming, computer music, audio-visuals, and music theatre.   Chi Him is the first saxophonist from Hong Kong to reach the penultimate round of the Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition, and has made appearances as an artist and performer in various festivals and occasions, including Taktlos Festival, Darmstadt Summer Course, Stuttgart Filmwinter Festival, and the Theater Basel. As an advocate of new music, he is also responsible for the premieres of more than 20 works by contemporary composers. Inspired by the New York downtown scene and the Japan noise music scene, Chi Him is currently focusing on opening up his own works to contemporary art and collaboration practice, while dealing with the political situation in his hometown Hong Kong. http://www.chihimchik.com Picture by Chi Him Chik We follow 2G on this event.
